Haiti is located between Cuba and Puerto Rico. It shares the Island of
Hispanola with the Dominican republic.
On January 12th 2010, a devastating earthquake hit Haiti, the poorest country in the western hemisphere. The violent ground shaking occurred for 35-60 seconds with a magnitude of 7.0 on the Richter Scale.
The 2010 Haiti earthquake's epicentre was the town of Léogâne approximately 25 kilometres west of Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital. The earthquake occurred at 16:53 local time on Tuesday, 12 January 2010. By the 24th of January, at least 52 aftershocks measuring 4.5 or greater had been recorded. An estimated three million people were affected by the earthquake.
